we had 2 friends over to play for a couple hours today(5-yr-old boy and 3-yr-old girl). it was mayhem. the most difficult part was seeing cassidy joining these 2 "rascon kids" in bullying paul (i.e. hiding from him, leaving him out, teasing him, and even spitting on him at one point). so, tonight's family night was loosely based on Cree-L Kofford's talk "Your Name Is Safe in Our Home" (Ensign, May 1999).
1)sing:families can be together forever
2)had kids arange words of sentence into correct order (title of talk)
3)scripture: D&C 136:23
4)talked about what home plate is in baseball -- it's "SAFE!!!" Our family's a team. In our home/family we want everyone to feel safe/comfortable/loved/happy. We're with friends only a short time, but our family members for eternity. We need to choose sides and be fiercely loyal to each other, kind, supportive, protective...
5)We role-played, practiced sliding to home plate SAFE!
6)We watched a clip of Bambi: Bambi and mother walking through the forest (their home) and being greeted by the other animals who share that home (family members). Many are polite, kind, loving, supportive. Thumper says something unkind. "If you can't say something nice...." Then realizes his mistake, and makes up for it by being very nice to Bambi, including him, helping him, encouraging him...
7)treats, of course. tom was covered with a thick chocolate coating by the end.

What a great lesson in family unity. I have also noticed when friends come to play that my girls tend to fight with each other more than usual to win their friends' affection. I think that we all could use the reminder to be "fiercely loyal" to one another, never putting anyone (except God) before our family. Thanks again for sharing your ideas. :)
Jonelle, you ARE amazing! What great lessons. You always put so much effort into them & your kids- family will be blessed for it. Way to go girl!
It brings back a lot of memories of trying to do lessons applied to what happened that day or week.
trust me, there's very little effort involved -- seriously, it's whatever i can think up/prepare in the 5-10 minutes after dinner.
